Tuesday Tips and Tricks: Ranger’s Mini Misters

Written by Samantha Peyton. Posted in Uncategorized

Hello everyone! Samantha here bringing you another Tuesday Tips and Tricks segment. Today’s topic is something I am REALLY excited about (as you will see in a moment)!  I would like to talk to you about some of the wonderful things you can fill Ranger’s Mini Misters with!

Mini Misters are teeny tiny little spray bottles that arrive empty. The fun comes when you fill them up with your own inks and use them in your own way! The tool is there, but it is up to you to use your imagination in order to figure out how you want to use them 🙂

Well, these little babies were the the first thing I ordered from the new Ranger items available now at the iCopic store!!

I was so excited when they arrived that I ended up filling them all and experimenting with various inks! My results are shown below:

DYE INK REFILLS
The first thing I did was put some dye refill ink into a Mini Mister. You can use any type of dye ink out there including the Tsukineko ink refills and the Ranger Distress refills.
As you can see below, when I filled the Mini Mister with refill ink only (no water), it produced a very splotchy effect.  Next, I diluted the dye ink with water and the effect was much softer and less blotchy.

Next, I wanted to see if I could get a glittery effect! So I looked around my craft area and found some Smooch Pearlized Accent Ink in the color “moonlight” (white). I didn’t have any super fine glitter to try out so I used this accent ink.  For the samples below, I filled the Mini Mister with dye ink, Smooch ink, and water. The pearlized accent ink added a really nice soft shimmer to the ink.

Distress Inks
Next I played around with the Distress Ink refills. Here I used a few drops of Ranger Distress ink in the color “Old Paper” combined with water and again the Smooch Accent Ink for some shimmer. I really love the way this color turned out because I can see this Old Paper color being used to make anything look a little softer and softly worn looking.

Next, I wanted to see what happened to Distress ink when misted with water. I filled a Mini Mister with water only for this experiment.

Here I used the Ranger Ink Pad in the “Tea Dye” color and rubbed it directly on my paper (this could be use for distressing your paper, coloring the edges of the paper, inking the raised parts of crinkled paper or an embossed paper, etc). Below, you can see the difference between the Tea Dye ink misted with water versus the plain Tea Dye Ink with no water sprayed onto it.

As you can see, the misted ink becomes softer and lighter looking. You can see a lot of variation, almost like a faux suede effect.

Stamping with Mini Misters

Next, I wanted to see if I could create a faux watercolor technique that I have heard about before. What I did here was I inked up the stamp with the “Worn Lipstick” Distress Ink Pad. After the stamp was inked, I stamped it like I normally would onto the paper (that is shown on the left).

Next, I reinked the stamp with the same ink and then misted it with water before stamping on the paper (that is shown in the center).

With the image on the right, I inked up the stamp with the “Worn Lipstick” color and then misted the stamp with a Mini Mister filled with the dye ink +water shown in the very first example.

This one is the regular stamped image:

Here is the image that was produced when the stamp was misted with water before stamping. This created a faux watercolor technique and you can tell that the edges aren’t as crisp as the image above.

This next image was sprayed with a different color ink after the stamp had been inked with the “Worn Lipstick” color.

TIP: Make sure not to spray too much ink! I noticed that I had sprayed too much ink onto this one.  If you spray too much, you could probably remove some of the ink with a paper towel.

WITH Copics
The next thing I tried was filling a Mini Mister with a Copic refill ink, here I used V12. When I sprayed using the Copic refill, I really loved the look of it! The ink is much less viscous than the water mixtures had been and it sprayed pretty evenly over the paper.

For my next experiment, I filled a Mini Mister with Colorless Blender #0 refill ink. I colored a solid area using BG45 and then sprayed it with the Colorless Blender Ink. The result was a very mottled and blotchy effect.

This would be a great technique to use to add a little texture to an image you colored.

What Distance is Best

I wanted to show you how distance is key to spraying with Mini Misters. For the first example below, I sprayed really close to the paper, maybe an inch or two away from the paper.

Here you can see what it looks like when sprayed approximately 6-8inches from the surface of the paper.

And here you can see what it looks like when I sprayed approximately 12-14inches from the paper.

Whew! Did you make it through all of those photos ok?  I am guessing your brain is just buzzing with ideas on what YOU could do with the Mini Misters. I hope that you gathered some ideas that you will use.

If you have other techniques or ideas on how to use the Mini Misters, please leave us a comment! I would love to hear more ideas.

Tomorrow Dana will be back with another one of her gorgeous projects for you.

Have a wonderful and crafty day!

Hi all! It’s Dana and I am here today to show you my latest creation.  I was thrilled when I learned that icopic is going to start carrying Ranger Distress Inks. As you get to know me you will find out how much I love to create backgrounds with my Copics but equally as fun is to make them with Tim Holtz Distress Inks by Ranger.

That’s what I did here for my Surfer Ian :
It is so easy to use shapes to create backgrounds. Here I used one of my Sizzix dies for the water shape (sorry, I bought it used and I don’t have a name) and one of my scallop nestie shapes for the clouds. I used Broken China Distress Ink for the water and Tumbled Glass Distress Ink for the sky. Here’s a close up:
It’s not showing up real well here but can you see the white flecks?? I used a toothbrush to splatter some Copic Opaque to mimic water spray. I love that stuff!  I stamped Surfer Ian with Memento Ink in Tuxedo Black on Copic X-Press It Blending Card.
Here’s the colors I used to color Ian:
Don’t forget to join in our challenge this week.  I used to be terrified of red but once you try you will adore them as much as I do ; )
Hugs~

Tuesday Tips & Tricks: Distress Products

Written by Samantha Peyton. Posted in Uncategorized

Hello everyone!! Samantha here, bringing you this week’s Tuesday Tips and Tricks.

Today, I would like to talk to you about the Ranger Tim Holtz Distress products that are brand new to iCopic!!

If you have never heard of Tim Holtz, well, then, you are MISSING OUT! Tim Holtz does amazing grunge and distressed style projects. You can see his work on his blog at http://www.timholtz.typepad.com/. He does some really beautiful work, like shown below:

Anyway, so the Distress line is his line of awesome products. Now if you are like me, you stick to the clean and simple style, but don’t worry, these products are great for us clean and simple folks too!!

Currently in the iCopic store you can find the following awesome Distress products:

These ink pads and reinkers are AWESOME!!! I have been playing with them lately and I don’t know why I waited so long!

Here are some tips and tricks for using the Distress Ink Pads and Reinkers:

  • Don’t just think about getting the ink pads because the reinkers are really neat too! They come with a dropper attached to the lid so you can add drops of ink to things (think splotches and splashes, diluting the ink and using it as a dye, mixing inks, etc)
  • This dye ink stays wet longer than your ordinary dye ink so that you can blend or even emboss with this ink.
  • When this ink is misted or mixed with water, it will SPREAD across your paper creating a nice tone on tone look.

Now these are NOT your normal embossing powders. Normal embossing powders emboss with a glossy smooth finish. Well, these embossing powders have a matte finish! Also, they are kind of rough and bumpy because of the “release crystals” inside the powder. These release crystals cause the embossing powder to have this really neat aged and distressed look to them!

Here are some tips and tricks for using the Embossing Powders:

  • Before embossing, you need to shake up the jar of embossing powder. This will make sure that all those release crystals are evenly mixed into the powder.
  • When heat setting, watch for the powder to turn to a deeper tone. WARNING: It does NOT turn shiny like your ordinary embossing powder. (Remember, the key to regular embossing is heating the powder until it turns shiny, well these powders are different!).
  • When cooled a few seconds, rub the surface with your finger and rub off some of the release crystals. This will give you the worn look.

I might be the most excited about these!! You can fill them with anything and then spray your projects with them!! Can you imagine all the possibilities these babies have?

Some tips and tricks for using the Mini Misters:

  • Fill them with your Copic refill inks.
  • Add a little pearl-ex powder or other super fine glitter to add some shimmer to your project.
  • Fill one with water and mist over your Ranger Distress Inks to create beautiful effects.

And last but not least, here is a video I did using the Distress ink to add dimension to a flower embellishment.

I will be doing some upcoming videos showing you more methods for using your Distress supplies. I am really excited about this new product line being available in the iCopic store and I hope you are excited too! Head over to the store and check out all the wonderful colors available in these neat products.

Have a great day!!

Hi Copic lovers!

Samantha here, bringing you another Tuesday Tips and Tricks segment.  Today, I would like to show you a fun way to use two new products that are available in the iCopic store.

I turned a simple white paper flower into something absolutely stunning (if I do say so myself) with the help of Ranger Distress Ink(Old Paper) and Sheer Shimmer Spritz by Tsukineko (Sparkle). I also used the SP and Company Hearty Hearts Backgrounds stamp set.
