Coloring With Hikka! Week Six: Copic Opaque White

Written by Hikka. Posted in Eye Candy (Projects), Tutorials

Heyyy, today’s colors or well, color, is white! Copic Opaque White that is. Let’s talk about that today! Cause why not? I’ve had a few people ask what I do and or how I use it.

This is copic opaque white! What I have is the jar. Which I personally find to be the better buy because this thing lasts forever. Not joking, I still have a good jar in a half!  So, what I mainly use it for, is highlight enhancement and sparkle. But really, there’s all sorts of stuff you could do. (Sparkles, stars, snow, magical fairy sneezes, adding in highlights if you accidentally forgot, etc)… It’s all up to you and what sort of look you’re going for. 😀

So what the heck is it? It is a white paint, a very thick (and hence it’s name) opaque paint. But another great thing is, it is water based. What? Water based? What’s so great about that, Hikka? Easy! It means you can use water to change the consistency and opacity of your paint! No special magic trick or crazy concoctions required.

So, what I use personally, is a fine paint brush.

I’m pretty sure you could use just about any sort of painting tool you want, I’ve even heard of people using toothpicks before! (I’d probably make an even bigger mess with those). But really, it depends on your tastes and what you’re goin’ for.

FIRST! Before you wanna be dipping your brush or toothpick in, I recommend stirring it some, cause even if you have used water to thin it some, it is a very thick paint, and has a tendency to settle. (I usually just use the handle of my brush to stir and then wash it off).

Alrighty, tip in and now we’re ready to begin.  I personally use a very light hand. Just a little flick usually does the trick.

See? Pretty easy!

Some f.a.q. that I’ve thought of off the top of my head here:

Q: HIKKA!! My jar lid is stuck!! What do I do?!

A: DON’T PANIC, it’s probably just paint that dried onto the rim of the jar, it happens, just run it under water for a bit, it should loosen things up enough for you to open (remember to wipe off your jar from the water so it doesn’t go flying out of your hand).
Q: Oh no! I didn’t close my lid all the way! Is my paint dried out?!

A: It’s probably fine, I have done this once, accidentally left my lid loose but over the jar for a day, so the paint more or less got a little dry. Again, the answer here is water. A few dribbles from the sink and a good stir and you should be good to go!

But of course, I wouldn’t try leaving the jar open to let the paint dry and then try reviving it.

Q: How long does the paint take to dry?

A: Not overly long actually. Probably less than five minutes? I usually give my stuff about ten anyway just to be sure so I don’t smudge it over my scanner’s bed.

Great post. I was really interested in this paint as well. I have tried the uniball gel pen and the sharpie poster paint marker, but I have not been happy with it as it always seems to suck up some of the color on your work and doesn’t stay white!!. This stuff looks great. I think I’ll be adding it to my wish list now. Thanks..

I actually personally love uniball’s gel pen for that reason. It comes in handy when I need a colored highlight. When I for sure need things to stay -white-, I use my copic paint. It’s very thick, so it doesn’t really suck up color that much. At least, I haven’t seen it do so when I use it. But perhaps if one did thin it out enough, it might? (I only have mine thinned out very slightly, just so it’ s less goopy, cause right when you buy it, it is pretty thick and kinda globs onto the brush, but it does wash off super easy, cause it’s water based :P)
